Denise Scott Brown Pritzker Prize Petition

March 2013

Petition

GSD students Caroline James and Arielle Assouline-Lichten began a petition in March 2013 calling on the Pritzker Prize committee to recognize Denise Scott Brown as a recipient of the 1991 prize that was awarded solely to her husband and design collaborator, Robert Venturi. Shared broadly through social media and covered by The New York Times, The New Yorker and Architectural Record, among others, the petition garnered over 9,000 signatures within a few weeks. Although it was eventually rejected, Caroline and Arielle understood the importance of calling attention to gender inequity in the design professions, and it ultimately motivated them to re-launch Women in Design as a student group that would continue to engage with these issues.
