2018-2019

What does the name of this organization actually mean? Should it serve as an indication of group membership? Should it include all who are welcome to join? Should it represent all on whose behalf we advocate? Should it include those for whom we believe we should advocate?

After a semester of research and an open vote, WiD voters selected the amended name Womxn in Design. The proposal of the name change makes clear the historic and cultural implications of the “x” in womxn. “Womxn” symbolically includes people of color, trans people, and people outside the gender binary. Whether or not these people are currently represented in the WiD membership, we declare ourselves and this organization to be adamantly dedicated to advocating for all Womxn in Design. We hope that this declaration, in conjunction with renewed outreach and action, will help make WiD more diverse, inclusive, active, and relevant.
