Denise Scott Brown Week

October 22-23 2013

Event

This week of events was held in response, and follow up, to two Harvard GSD students’ (Arielle Assouline-Lichten and Caroline James) petition seven months earlier calling for retroactive acknowledgement of Denise Scott Brown’s contributions to the 1991 Pritzker Prize, which was solely awarded to her collaborator and husband, Robert Venturi. WiD hosted a week of events dedicated to Denise Scott Brown, including her lecture “Mayhew’s Architecture”, a panel discussion and open forum, and an exhibition.

Mayhew’s Architecture: Lecture

Scott Brown’s lecture considered changes in architecture and her work over the span of her career, and how in “old age” she came to be at the center of a movement around gender equity and representation that is transforming the discipline once again. “Thank you for what Women in Design has done to make my old age happy,” Scott Brown said. “With the petition, who needs the Pritzker? That’s my prize, that’s my reward.”
